Richard T. "Dick" Lier

February 2, 1935 — July 30, 2011

Richard T. “Dick” Lier, 76, lifelong Superior area resident, died Saturday, July 30, 2011 in his home, surrounded by his family, after a short battle with mesothelioma.

He was born in Superior on Feb. 2, 1935 to Ole and Lillian (Froen) Lier.

Dick was a lifelong Superior resident and a 1953 graduate of Superior East High School.

He had been an employee of Murphy Oil Company for 33 years, retiring in 1995.

In earlier years, he served in the Wisconsin National Guard 32nd Division.

He married Joyce Polaski on May 18, 1957 in Superior.

Dick enjoyed woodworking and could fix anything.

He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local No. 305 and the Superior Area Bowling Association, being very active and holding many positions, including being a member of the Tournament Committee for over 30 years.

In 1990, he was inducted into the Superior Bowling Hall of Fame.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Howard Lear, Harold Lier, Clarence Lier, his twin, Ray Lier and Helen Madsen.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce; one son, Richard J. (Patty) Lier; one daughter, Jeanne (Mike) Nolan; four grandchildren, Sara (Chris) Rydberg, Tim (Emily) Nolan, Hannah Lier and Callie Lier; and three great-grandchildren, Ava Nolan, Naomi Nolan and Shawn Rydberg.

The family wishes to express special thanks to St. Luke’s Oncology Dept. and St. Luke’s Hospice, for their wonderful care of Dick.

Visitation will be from 10: 00 AM, Thursday, August 4, 2011 until the 11:00 AM, Mass of Christian Burial at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Superior with Rev. Fr. James Tobolski, officiating.

Inurnment will be in St. Francis Cemetery.
