Robert "Bob" L. Bennett

Robert L. “Bob” Bennett, 80, longtime Superior resident, died Friday, March 4, 2011 at Essentia Health St. Mary’s in Duluth.

He was born on July 25, 1930 in Cicero, IL to Oscar and Viola Angela Bennett.

He married Dolores Chicras on February 14, 1953 in Superior and recently celebrated fifty-eight years of marriage.

Bob was employed with the Superior Police Department for 36 years retiring as the Chief of Police in 1989.

He was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church and was head usher for many years.

For five years, he played professional baseball for the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Chicago White Sox Organizations. Bob was a member of the Championship Superior Blues in 1952. He also was a professional scout with the Chicago White Sox Organization. He was President of the SYO (Superior Youth Organization) Little League Baseball and Commissioner of Babe Ruth Baseball for over 15 years and a member of the Professional Baseball Players of America Association. Bob was a member of both the National and State Associations of Chiefs of Police Organizations and was appointed by Governor Lucey to the Governors Law Enforcement Standard Board and reappointed by Governor Martin Schreiber.

Bob is survived by his wife, Dolores; two daughters, Kathy Woodhall and Patty Ann (Jim) Cahill, both of Superior, WI; son, Robert L. (Cindy) Bennett, Superior, WI; grandchildren, Robbie, Tony, Tyler, Mitchell, Ryan, Michael and Angela and seven great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, Monday, March 7, 2011 in Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church and continue until the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Fr. Andrew Ricci as celebrant.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Superior.

Pallbearers for the service will be Bob’s grandchildren.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to Cathedral of Christ the King Church or to Essentia Health St. Mary’s Hospice, Duluth, MN.

The Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, 1304 Hammond Avenue, Superior is assisting the family with arrangements.
