Robert E. “Bud Solin”, 92, lifelong Superior resident, passed away from complications of Alzheimer’s Disease on Wednesday, May 4, 2016, with his family by his side. He was born on November 30, 1923, the youngest child of Walter E. and Esther (Dahl) Solin. He lived in the Central Park neighborhood on the same block where he was born for most of his life.
During his senior year at Superior East High School he was drafted to serve in the United States Army along with many classmates from the class of 1943. He served in the military police in the American Theatre and then in the 381 st Engineers’ Combat Battalion in the Philippines and Japan in World War II.
On October 15, 1948, he married Faith Berg at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Superior. Together, they raised four children while Bud was employed with the Wisconsin State Bureau of Grain Regulations at Superior Grain Elevators. He retired in 1988 after 39+ years. For several years while periodically laid off, he also worked at the King Midas Flour Mill. His strong work ethic was an example to his family.
Bowling on several teams each week was a special pleasure for Bud who was inducted into the Superior Area Bowling Hall of Fame in 2002. One of his teams bowled together for 60 years. He was a sports’ fan, coaching several Superior youth baseball teams, including the Senators, from 1962 – 1978, as his sons were growing up and beyond, and also cheering for the Vikings and the Twins.
His special pleasures were gliding around a dance floor on Saturday nights, singing in his beautiful baritone voice, tending to his yard work, and enjoying his grandchildren’s sporting events. He lived his life as a gentleman - polite, kind, friendly, loving, encouraging and smiling often- even during his last memory-challenged years.
He is survived by four children, JoAnn (Russell) Hollman, Manawa, WI, Glenn (Susan) Solin, Duluth, MN, Eugene (JoAnn) Solin, Duluth, MN, and Shirley (Mark) Pinney, Proctor, MN; twelve grandchildren, Seth (TaraLea) Hollman, Shari (Matthew) Palmeri, Shawn (Matthew) Schliewe, Andrew (Sara) Solin, Erika Solin, Jennifer (Mitch) Rothschadl, Joshua Warriner, Claire, Brett, Aaron, Isaac, and Reese Pinney and fifteen great-grandchildren Justin, Chandlar, Ellia, Alex, Gabriel, Madeline, Sophia, Addison, Spencer, Mollie, Arianna, Greta, Jackson, Veronica and Lucia; special friend Alice Heikkila; sister-in-law, Gloria Berg; many precious nieces and nephews and treasured life-long friends, Bob, Dottie, Jim and Dessa.
