Robert A. Horyza

Robert A. Horyza, 83, lifelong Superior resident, passed away on Friday, October 26, 2018, surrounded by his family. He was born in Superior, April 15, 1935, the son of Walter and Wanda (Mizinski) Horyza.

He graduated from Cathedral High School in Superior and later enlisted in the United States Army, serving in Korea.

Bob married the love of his life, Gretchen Oltmanns McElmurry, on August 22, 1969, and they were to celebrate fifty years of marriage this coming August. They enjoyed traveling together during their retirement years, including many winter trips to Arizona and Florida, and a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Holy Land.

He proudly worked for Murphy Oil Company for the majority of his career until his retirement in 1992. He had a natural ability to work on and fix anything mechanical.

Bob attended Bayside Baptist Church in Superior. He enjoyed golfing, especially at the Nemadji Golf Course, bowling, downhill skiing, and watching his grandchildren participate in sporting events.

Bob was a man of strong faith. He loved the Lord and his family greatly. Bob had a generous heart and was always willing to lend a hand, or a smile, or words of encouragement. He was a friend to many and will be missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his loving wife, Gretchen, Bob is survived by his son, Timothy (Tamy) Horyza, Duluth, MN; daughters, Lori (Patrick) Flynn, Superior, WI, Lynn (Richard) Reich, Fitchburg, WI, and Susan (Christopher) Bowles, Monroe, NC; grandchildren, Bob (Erica) Horyza, Nathan (Tessa) Horyza, Chip (Samatha) Flynn, Matt (Laura) Flynn, Kayti (Bill) Emerson, Jordyn Reich, Alex Reich, Rebecca Bowles, Christopher Bowles, Ethan (Jackie Parker) Bowles, Sarah Bowles; great-grandchildren, Emma, Ethan, Gibson, Winsor, Evie, and London Horyza, and Charlie Flynn; and several nieces and nephews.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Wanda; sister, Gerry Tomzak; and brother, Leonard Horyza.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, Saturday, November 3, 2018, at Bayside Baptist Church, 3915 N.16 ^th Street, Superior, and will continue until the 11:00 AM funeral service, with Pastor Tom Bush officiating.

Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Superior.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Bob’s name, to North Country Ride, 180 Hatinen Road, Esko, MN 55733, or Bayside Baptist Church.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Sarah, June, and the rest of the staff at REM in Superior as well as the hospice staff from Essentia.
