Robert L. Hanson, 64, Superior, died Thursday, November 19, 2009 in St. Mary's Medical Center following a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born on June 26, 1945 in Ashland to William and Dorothy (Touve) Hanson, and was raised in Iron River, WI.
He served in the United States Army where he received a Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Marksman Medal, Viet Nam Service Medal and the Republic of Viet Nam Campaign Medal.
Bob married Kathy Olson on June 25, 1966 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Superior and celebrated forty-three years of marriage.
He was a longtime employee of the University Wisconsin-Superior for over thirty years.
He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and lifetime member of the Thomas F. Stein VFW Post #1091.
Bob loved spending time with his family and friends. He loved children and was affectionately known as the "Candy Man". Bob's favorite title was "Grandpa". He loved caring for his yard and working on cars.
In addition to his wife Kathy, Bob is survived by one daughter, Sherrie (Paul) Wenske, Superior; one son Robert M. (Toni) Hanson, Superior; four grandchildren, Desiree Wenske, Brenden Hanson, Brady Hanson and Austin Wenske; two brothers, LeRoy (Evelyn) Hanson, Phillips, WI, Marvin (Audrey) Hanson, Green Bay, WI and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother Dorothy Hanson; his father William Hanson and a brother Gerald Hanson.
Visitation will begin at 5:00 PM Sunday, November 22, 2009 in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home. Visitation will continue at 10:00 AM Monday, November 23, 2009 until the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Rev. Fr. James Tobolski will be celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Francis Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Thomas F. Stein VFW Post #1091, Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435 Combine Honor Guard.
Pallbearers for the service will be Paul Wenske, Chet Petzold, Don Wallin, Clyde Johnson, Mark Dalbec and David Robertson.
Honorary pallbearers will be Bob's grandchildren.
