Robert Thorp, 70, longtime Superior area resident, died Saturday, October 23, 2010 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth, MN.
He was born on July 19, 1940 in Rice Lake, WI to Colburn and Dorothy (Stiles) Thorp.
He graduated from Superior Senior High School and received his Degree in History from the University Wisconsin-Superior.
Robert served his country for many years with the United States Army National Guard.
He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears fan. He loved spending time with family and friends and listening to jazz music.
Robert is survived by four aunts, Jane (Joe) Francis, Corrine Thorp, Marilyn Buckstaff and Avis Thorp; one uncle, Glen Thorp; two special nieces, Melisa (Mark) DeToffol and their children, De Shon and Donovan who is Robert’s godson and Jennifer (Jason) Rygg and their children, Trevor and Alayna.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, James Thorp.
Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM, on Friday, October 29, 2010 in Zion Lutheran Church and continue until the 1:00 PM memorial service with Pastor Patrick Ziems officiating.
Inurnment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers for the service will be Mark DeToffol, Jason Rygg, George, Jim and De Shon Pleau and Trevor Rygg.
Military honors will be accorded by the Richard I Bong American Legion Post #435 and the John L and David L. Banks American Legion Post #418 Combined Honor Guard.
