Roger Dean Heytens

February 27, 1928 — July 3, 2009

Roger Dean Heytens, 81, passed away July 3, 2009 at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth. He was born February 27, 1928 in Superior to Wilfred and Edna (Lozon) Heytens and was a lifelong Superior resident.

After attending schools in Superior, he worked as a wheelsman on the Great Lakes and later worked for the Great Northern Railroad and in maintenance at Great Lakes Storage for many years. In 1969, he founded H & H Lumber Co., Inc., and worked there until his retirement in 1988.

He was a member and active volunteer at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and was a member of the St. Francis Travelers Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Robert Heytens.

Roger is survived by his wife of 59 years, Eleanor (Thoreson); sons Bill (Sally) Heytens, Bayfield and Tim (Desiree) Heytens, Superior; daughters Nancy (Mike) Murray, Superior, Diane (Dave) Nelson, New Richmond, WI, and Jackie Heytens, Superior; 12 grandchildren, Toby (Sarah) Heytens, Washington DC, Troy (Laura) Heytens, Silver Spring, MD, Heidi (Bryan) Wolbert, Superior, Todd (Kelly) Murray, Minneapolis, MN, Ryan (Danielle) Murray, Brookfield, WI, Steven Murray, Superior, Peter, Maria and Patty Nelson, all of New Richmond, WI, and Matt, Andy, and Brady Heytens, all of Superior; 3 great-grandchildren, Rocco, Grant, and Olivia; brothers Russell (Dorothy) Heytens, Richard Heytens, Paul (Gloria) Heytens, and Charles (Diane) Heytens, all of Superior; and sisters Eileen Flyen, Arliss (Jim) Conner, and Janet (Gary) Haack, all of Superior.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, July 6 at 11:00 am at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Superior. There will be no visitation.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Rehabilitation Department at SMDC Medical Center or to Covenant House, 460 West 41st Street, New York, NY 10036, www.covenanthouse.org.

The Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, 1304 Hammond Avenue, Superior is assisting the family with arrangements.
