Rosemary “Rosie” Alice Hietala, 76, Poplar, WI, passed away peacefully Saturday, February 2, 2019 surrounded by her family following a brief illness at Essentia Health in Duluth, MN. She was born in Superior, WI on December 4, 1942 to Peter and Dehlia (Abrahamson) Keup.
She was a 1961 graduate of Superior Central High School. She worked for the Maple School District as a cook for many years, which led her to purchase and operate the Hamburger Hut in Poplar for ten years before moving to Florida where she managed a beach condominium. Rosie also touched the lives of the many young children she took care of over the years, many of whom she considered like her own grandchildren. When not taking care of children, you could find her helping Frank at the farm, especially during calving and haying season, and driving the gator as her favorite mode of transportation.
She is preceded in death by her parents Pete and Dehlia Keup, father of her children Ernie Hietala, brothers Charlie, Lester, Gene and Floyd.
Rosie is survived by daughter, Jean Hietala, Pagosa Springs, CO; sons, Frank (Kara) Hietala, Poplar, WI and Steve Hietala, St. Michael, MN; her siblings, Loren (Denise) Keup, Ben (Gail) Keup, Esther Krause, Irene (Dick) Eskleson and Joyce (Jim) Follis and numerous nieces and nephews. Rosie was also blessed with a multitude of close friends both here and in Florida.
To honor Rosie’s wishes, no services will be held. A family committal will take place at a later date.
