Roy E. Johnson

April 15, 1929 — May 5, 2019

Roy E. Johnson, 90, Superior resident, died Sunday, May 5, 2019, at Solvay Hospice House in Duluth, MN.  He was born on April 15, 1929, in Superior, WI to Earl N. and Dorothy (Young) Johnson.

Roy is a United States Army veteran who was stationed in Alaska during the Korean War, where he served for four years.  Upon returning to Superior, he was employed at U.S. Steel for 26 years, and then worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a rural mail carrier in the Poplar and Port Wing branches until his retirement at 81 years of age.  Most on his route will remember him as a man who never met a dog he didn’t like, or that didn’t like him.

Roy met the love of his life, Elizabeth Fandel, who was from Ladysmith, WI, and they were married on July 24, 1954.  They would have celebrated sixty-five years of marriage this year.

He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Superior, WI, a member of the Wisconsin Woodland Owners Association, and a 4-H Club leader.  Roy was a two time cancer survivor.  He enjoyed WITC mechanic’s classes (in lieu of his former stock car racing days), travel, jigsaw puzzles, organic gardening, telling stories, and watching wildlife.

Roy is survived by his wife Elizabeth; four daughters, Kateri (Lewis) Johnson-Holland, Eau Claire, WI, Kristina (Jeffrey) Riley, Minneapolis, MN, Bonnie (Brian) Savo, Renton, WA, and Radiana Johnson, Superior, WI; three sons, Brian Johnson, Bloomington, MN, Brandon (Lori) Johnson, Farmington, MN, and Barry (Sherry) Johnson, Houston, TX; seven grandchildren Joseph, Kate, Amber, Kimeri, Kaili, Derek and Caitlin; five great-grandchildren, Riley, Elsie, Cameron, Riley, and AJ; two half-brothers, Kenneth (Mary) Wergeland, and Keith (Cynthia) Wergeland; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Earl Duane Johnson.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM on Friday, May 31 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Superior, and continue until the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Fr. David Neuschwander as celebrant.  The burial will be on Monday, June 3 at 11:00 AM at the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spooner, WI.
