Roy W. Wahto

Roy W. Wahto, 85, Superior, passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 in his home. He was born on April 20, 1929 in Superior to Emil and Ellen (Lammi) Wahto and was a lifelong Superior resident.

He was a graduate of the former East High School.

He served his country in the United States Air Force as an aircraft fabrication specialist.

In his early years, Roy was a bartender at Smitty’s and worked at the Androy Hotel as a bartender and maintenance man. He was later employed as a maintenance engineer with Security Management, Inc. Roy was a longtime resident and caretaker for the Regina Hill apartments in East End Superior for over 20 years.

He was very proud of his Finnish heritage. He loved bowling and bowled a number of 300 games throughout his lifetime. He also was an animal lover and gardener. Roy will always be remembered as a friend to all who knew him.

Roy is survived by three daughters, Sara (Wade Pierson) Wahto, Ham Lake, MN, Sonja Wahto, Lakeland, MN and Jessica (Drew O’Neil) Wahto, Blaine, MN; three grandchildren, Zack and Kyle Pierson and Brennan Wahto; one brother, Robert (Barbara) Wahto, Waukesha, WI; several nieces and nephews and Roy’s former wife and mother of his children, Rev. Mary Olson, Blaine, MN.

He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Ed, Arnie and Rudy; one sister, Helen Charles and one nephew.

Visitation will begin at 12 noon and will continue until the 2:00 PM Memorial Service on Monday, January 12, 2015 in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home with Pastor Sarah Kerkes of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, officiating.

Burial will be in the Nemadji Cemetery in the Spring.
