Russell L. Heytens

November 5, 1924 — August 16, 2020

Russell L. Heytens, 95, lifelong resident of Superior, died peacefully, Sunday, August 16, 2020 at Villa Marina Health and Rehabilitation in Superior. He was born in Superior, November 5, 1924, the son of Wilfred and Edna (Lozon) Heytens.

He graduated high school and went on to serve his country honorably in the United States Navy during WWII.

He worked as a switchman for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad, retiring in 1984 after thirty-six years of dedicated service.

Russell was united in marriage to Dorothy Stefanko, July 12, 1952, and they recently celebrated sixty-eight years of marriage before his passing.

He was a longtime active member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, and was the oldest living member of the Belgian Club in Superior. He was also a past member of St. Francis Travelers and the Superior Moose Club #606, and he and Dorothy enjoyed their winters together in Florida and Arizona.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy Heytens, Superior, WI; daughter, Geri (Gary) Behrendt, South Range, WI; son, Ron (Annette Ojala) Heytens, Superior, WI; grandchildren, Zachary and Dominick; great-granddaughter, Lillian Belle; sisters, Eileen Flyen, Arla Conner, and Janet (Gary) Haack; brother, Paul (Gloria) Heytens; and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Robert, Charlie, Richard, and Roger Heytens.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, Friday, September 25, 2020 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 2316 East 4 th Street, Superior, and will continue until the 11:00 AM Memorial Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Fr. James Tobolski as celebrant.

Military Honors will be accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435 Honor Guard.
