Shirley L. Petite

Shirley Lorene Petite, 91, longtime resident of South Range, died peacefully Friday, August 25, 2023, at home surrounded by family. She was born in Washburn, WI, on February 25, 1932. the daughter of Gertrude and Donald D. Potter.

Shirley was united in marriage to Gerald J. Petite, December 1, 1949, and they celebrated 71 years of marriage before his passing in 2021.

Shirley was a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, aunt, and friend to all who knew and loved her. She was a talented artist of many genres. She was a Nurse for many years and after retirement she helped many families and friends at the end of their lives. Prior to nursing school, she managed and cooked at the Sweden House Restaurant in Superior. She loved traveling, cooking, and entertaining her family and large gatherings.

Shirley was a member of Hawthorne Assembly of God church and a former longtime member of the Duluth Gospel Tabernacle Church.

She is preceded in death by her spouse, Gerald Jay; grandson Kyle David Hart; her parents; sisters, Dessa Foote, Joyce Kelley, Dorothy Baer, and her brother, Donald David Potter.

She is survived by her children, Suzanne Hart (Robert), South Range, WI, Scott (Peggy) Petite, Superior, WI, Elizabeth Petite, Lake Nebagamon, WI, Jay (Maxine) Petite, South Range, WI, Becka Petite, South Range, WI, and Tony Petite, South Range, WI; nineteen grandchildren, Karen, Kimberly, Rachael, Justin, Ellyse, Amanda M., Amanda G., Dianna, David, Taylor, Wes, Angel, Gerald, Michael, Matthew, Kara, Lauren, and Sara; 26 great-grandchildren with one due February 2024; many nieces and nephews who loved her, and her sister-in-law, Hella Potter.

Per her wishes there is no traditional funeral service at this time, but the family and close friends will have a Memorial Celebration in the future.
