Steve J. Gondik

March 17, 1917 — December 13, 2011

Steve J. Gondik, 94, Superior, died Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at Essentia Health St. Mary’s, Superior. He was born on March 17, 1917 in Superior to Stephen and Anna Gondek.

He graduated from the former Central High School.

He married his wife Betty on February 24, 1940 in Carlton, MN and celebrated sixty years of marriage before her passing on September 29, 2000.

Steve served his country with the United States Navy during World War II.

Steve was employed by the former Great Northern Railroad, retiring from the Burlington Northern Railroad following many years of service. He also tended bar for many years at the former Nadolski’s Bar in East End Superior.

He was a lifetime member of the Polish Club and a member of the Eagles Club Aerie #80. Steve was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He was interested in stock car racing and he loved gardening.

Steve is survived by two daughters, Nancy Gondik, Superior, Sandra Anderson, Colgate, WI; two sons, Richard (Janet) Gondik, Superior, David Gondik, South Range; thirteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Ann Kelly, Superior; two brothers, Michael (Leola) Gondek, Superior, Joseph (Janice) Gondek, Foxboro, WI and loyal friend, Lois Gaiovnik, Superior and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife Betty, Steve is preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia McDowell, a great-great-grandson, James Dylan Kauther; a sister, Mary Gondek and a brother, John Gondek.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM until the 11:00 am Funeral Service on Friday, December 16, 2011 in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home. Rev. Fr. Andrew Ricci will officiate.

Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery with military honors to be accorded by the American Legion Post #435 Honor Guard.

Steve’s grandsons will be recognized as pallbearers for the service.

Steve’s family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Joanne Hudacek and Linda Mertes, for the wonderful care they offered Steve.
