Thaddeus "Ted" Birch

August 24, 1921 — May 20, 2010

Thaddeus “Ted” Birch, 88, a lifelong Superior resident, died Thursday, May 20, 2010 at St. Mary’s Hospice and Palliative Care, Duluth, MN.

He was born on August 24, 1921 to John and Josephine Birch.

Elementary attendance was at the St. Stanislaus Grade School, then onto Central Junior and High School.

After graduating from UWS he enlisted in the United States Navy, thereby attending Lawrence College in Appleton, WI, the Officers training school at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL; and Great Lakes Naval and Anti-submarine Warfare in Staten Island. He served his country in the navy during World War II in the Pacific area. After several years, he was honorably discharged as second lieutenant.

He worked briefly as a switchman for the Soo Line Railroad then became a Probation and Parole Agent for the State of Wisconsin retiring after twenty years of service in December of 1979.


On December 20, 1945 he was united in marriage to Helen Depta in Superior and they were to celebrate sixty-five years together this year.

He was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife Helen; two daughters, Christine (Michael) Sabyan and Judy (Kerry) Larson; one grandchild, Nicole (David) Jensen; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers and two sisters.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, Monday, May 24, 2010 in Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church and continue until the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Fr. Andrew Ricci as celebrant.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Superior.
Military Honors will be accorded by the Thomas F. Stein VFW Post #1091 and
Richard I. Bong, American Legion Post #435 Combined Color Guard.

Pallbearers for the service will be James Gerzic, Kerry Larson, Michael Sabyan, David Jensen, Philip and Alan Birch.
