Virgil D. Sabin, 79, Superior, died Sunday, October 4, 2009 at his home with his wife of twenty-three years and his sister-in-law Lavaun Marley at his side, after losing a brave battle to lung cancer.
He was born on March 3, 1930 in Lake Wilson, MN to Ellen and Chauncey Sabin. He lived there for several years before moving to Mason City, IA. After graduating from high school in Mason City, he served in the U.S. Navy for three years from 1948 to 1952, assigned to the Aircraft Carrier, USS Tarawa.
Virgil retired from Lehigh Portland Cement Plant in Mason City. He moved to Superior in 1986 and married Geraldine Fisketjon on January 10, 1986 in Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Superior.
Virgil loved to hunt and fish. He did so for several years with special friends, Bob and George. He also enjoyed walking and the many trips they took with good friends, Betty and George.
Virgil took up golfing after he moved to Superior. He especially loved golfing at Pattison Park Golf Course where he golfed in the Thursday Senior League and the Friday afternoon league. He served as President/Secretary of the Thursday league for several years and made many friends at the golf course. In 1997 he scored his first and only hole-in-one.
He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Superior where he has served as a Deacon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Genevieve Sabin, his first wife Beatrice and a stepson Larry Mason all of Mason City, IA.
He is survived by his wife Geraldine, a sister Joyce Sabin, Mason City, IA, a stepdaughter Lori (Greg) Poland, Surprise, AZ; a sister-in-law Lavaun Marley, Shreveport, LA, five grandchildren, Diane, Laurie, Danny, Jeff and Chris; eight great-grandchildren Jeremy, Jennifer, Jamie, Jordan, Jayden, Chase, Taylor and Michael; two nieces Cheryl (Jeff) Foss, Gerry Marley, and three great-nieces Kristin, Taylor and Madison Foss, all of Shreveport, LA.
Virgil was a loving and devoted husband. He would like to be remembered as a good friend, caring and with a sense of humor.
There will be a visitation time from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Thursday, October 8, 2009 in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home. In keeping with Virgil wishes, there will be no formal funeral service.
Inurnment will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hawthorne, WI. at a later date.
Should friends desire, memorials in Virgil's name may be made to Our Savior's Lutheran Church Building Fund or SMDC Hospice program.
