Virginia R. Mcfarlane

February 21, 1925 — August 3, 2011

Virginia R. McFarlane, 86, lifelong Superior resident died Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at Essentia Health St. Mary’s, Duluth, MN.

She was born on February 21, 1925 in Superior, the daughter of Alexander and Frances (Pufall) Gucinski.

Virginia graduated from the former Superior East High School.

Virginia married Kenneth C. McFarlane on August 17, 1946 at St. Adelbert’s Catholic Church in Superior and had celebrated forty-one years of marriage before his passing in April 1988.

She was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas-Court 1190, East End Senior Citizens, Superior Cathedral Band Mothers and St. Anthony’s Church Rug Ladies.

She was fondly known as “Greyhound Granny” because of her love of traveling.
Virginia also loved playing cards, socializing and was involved in many church, school and outdoor activities. She was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and Green Bay Packers, as well as being an enthusiastic cheerleader for all of her grandsons’ and great-grandchildren’s sports activities.

She also was an excellent baker, dancer and proud wife of Ken, a former B-17 Bomber pilot. She knit and crocheted innumerable slippers, sweaters and afghans for all.

Virginia is survived by and will be forever missed by three daughters, Nancy (Clayton) Venne, Superior; Anita McFarlane, Chicago; and Mary (James) Hartwig, Sturgeon Bay, WI; two grandsons, Gregory (Erin) Venne, Eau Claire, WI; and Robert (Pam) Venne, Fort Worth, Texas; two great-grandchildren, Ryan Venne and Maria Venne; and many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth, her parents, one brother, Louis Gucinski and his three children.

Visitation will begin at 9:30 AM, Saturday, August 6, 2011 until the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Superior, with Rev. Father Don Kania, as celebrant.
Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Superior.

Pallbearers for the service will be Gregory Venne, Robert Venne, Richard Gucinski, Ed Laureys, Thomas “Butch” Liebaert and Robert Nelson.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made in Virginia’s name to her beloved St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Superior, Wisconsin.
