Walter Barnard

Walter Barnard, 67, lifelong Superior area resident, died Sunday, September 19, 2010 at Bayshore Health Shore, Duluth, MN after a four year battle with cancer.

He was born on February 16, 1943 in Superior to Eugene and Ida (Beetcher) Barnard.

He graduated from the former East High School.

Walter served his country in the United States Navy.

He married Elise Reid on February 11, 1965 at Christ Lutheran Church in Superior and recently celebrated forty-five years of marriage.

Walter was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Metro Credit Union Board, the Landlords Association and he owned and operated Barnard’s Mini Mart from 1972 to 1990.

In addition to his wife Elise, Walter is survived by three sons, Randy (Annette) Barnard, San Diego, CA, Kelly (Kathy) Barnard, Duluth, MN, Joey (Becky) Barnard, Mt. Pleasant, NC; four grandsons; two sisters, Ruth (Ed) Routh, Seattle, WA, Dorothy (Larry) Jones, Mora, MN; four brothers, Frank (Judy) Barnard, Madison, WI, Wally (Alice) Barnard, Superior, Jim (Harriet) Barnard, Superior, Paul (Carol) Barnard, Superior and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will begin at 10:30 AM until the 11:30 AM Funeral Service on Saturday, September 25, 2010 at the Apostolic Faith Assembly Church, 1102 Cummings Ave. in Superior, with Pastor Lincoln Frye, officiating.

Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Veteran’s Memorial Park.

Pallbearers for the service will be his three sons Randy, Kelly and Joey Barnard; a grandson, Cody Wicklund; his nephews, Tom, Ryan, Eric and Dale Barnard and a close family friend, Dean Miller.

Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Douglas County Veteran’s Administration with the proceeds to go to replace the travel van.
