Walter L. “Micky” Nilsen, 84, longtime resident of Superior, WI, died Thursday, May 24, 2018 at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth, MN. He was born in Superior June 10, 1933, the son of Walter Nilsen Sr. and Lottie (Parzych) Nilsen.
Micky served his country honorably in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Japan.
He married Mary Ann Barthen on January 24, 1956 and they celebrated sixty-two years of marriage before his passing.
He attended school here in Superior, and obtained his postsecondary education at the University of Wisconsin Superior going on to become a successful business man for many years before his retirement.
Micky was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church in Superior. He was one of the Founding Fathers of the fifth and sixth grade basketball team and couched the youth for eight years in Blaine Elementary School. He served as the President of the University Wisconsin Superior Boosters Club.
Micky was the owner of the Cove Cabaret here in Superior, and of the Hinckley Flea Market. He was a business man and a property investor. He was the co-owner and operator of NAP Beverage, owner of the Bye Rite Discounts, and proudly contributed to the volunteer community here in Superior.
Micky is survived by his beloved wife Mary Ann Nilsen, Superior, WI; six sons, Rawn (Janet) Nilsen, Duluth, MN, Gary Nilsen, Houston, TX, Michael (Nancy) Nilsen, Duluth, MN, Darryl (Stephanie) Nilsen, Little Falls, MN, Mark (April) Nilsen, Minneapolis, MN, and Greg Nilsen, Superior, WI; nine grandchildren, Julianne, Eric, Nicolaas, Michael, David, Patricia, Aaron, Josie and Katie; and two great-grandchildren, Emilia and Lillianna.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, Saturday, June 2, 2018 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 2316 East 4 th Street, Superior, and will continue until the 11:00
AM Memorial Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Fr. James Tobolski as celebrant.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Superior, where military honors will be accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435 Honor Guard.
Micky’s sons will be recognized as Honorary Pallbearers.
