William “Bill” Glonek
William Raymond Glonek, Sr., 79, a lifelong Superior resident, passed away on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at St. Mary’s Cardiac Intensive Care Unit in Duluth after a long and courageous battle with many health issues.
He was born on November 4, 1929 in Superior, WI to George and Margaret (Liska) Glonek.
After graduating from high school, Bill worked at the family business in North End, the Glonek Brothers Grocery Store. In 1948, he entered the military and served his country in Japan as Corporal during the Korean Conflict. He was discharged in 1951 and returned to the family grocery business where he worked until it closed in 1961. He then worked at the former Co-op Warehouse until he began working as a meat buyer for the former Twin Ports Grocery/ Gateway Foods Warehouse and Fleming Foods.
In previous years, he was active in area bowling leagues and enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing his guitar and singing. He was a devoted Catholic and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He especially loved spending time at his cabin in Iron River, WI. He was a lifetime member of the DAV and VFW Post #1091.
Bill married Joyce Holmberg on June 5, 1954 and had recently celebrated fifty-five years of marriage.
He is survived by his wife and five children, William “Willie” (LeAnne) Glonek, Carole (Randy) Rowe, James “Jim” (Brenda) Glonek, George (Nicole) Glonek and Cathy (Todd) Johnson; brother Joseph (Doris) Glonek; sister Delores “Lorrey” Kastberg; brother-in-law Lloyd (Bonnie) Holmberg; former brother-in-law Melvin Saline; seventeen grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother George Glonek, sister Margaret “Mickey” Saline, brother-in-law Harland “Ken” Kastberg, former sister-in-law Gen Glonek, and nieces Cheryl, Cindy and Linda Kay.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 in Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church and continue until the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Fr. Andrew Ricci and Rev. Fr. Daniel Dahlberg concelebrants.
Pallbearers for the service will be Bill’s three sons, Willie, Jim and George; sons-in-law, Randy and Todd; and brother, Joe. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the Thomas F. Stein VFW Post #1091 and Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435 Combined Color Guard.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Fr. Dan Dahlberg, Superior Dialysis Center, VA Clinic, Villa Marina, Miller Dwan, St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth and Gentiva nurse Jill.
The Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, 1304 Hammond Avenue, Superior, WI is assisting the family with arrangements.
