William R. "Bill" Harry

September 11, 1919 — May 7, 2011

William R. “Bill” Harry, 91, Superior, died peacefully on Saturday, May 7, 2011, at Bethany Riverside Nursing Facility in La Crosse, WI.

He was born September 11, 1919, in Marshfield, WI to Lewis W. and Dorothy Harry.

Bill attended parochial grade school in Marshfield and graduated from McKinley High School there.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on Oct. 13, 1941, and was stationed at Keesler Field in Biloxi, MS.

Upon graduation from training he was sent to the Pacific where he served 40 months with the 6th Night Fighter Squadron as a chief mechanic.

He also flew combat missions as a flight engineer.

He received his honorable discharge on Oct. 12, 1945.

On August 16, 1948, he married Marian Louise Green at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Superior, and in 2010 they celebrated sixty-two years of marriage.

She preceded him in death on Nov. 10, 2010.

After the war, Bill worked in the photoengraving industry in Milwaukee and in 1952 moved to the Superior area to begin work at Duluth Photo Engraving Co. (later known as Duluth Photo Graphics.)

After being promoted to general manager in the mid-1960s, he purchased the company in 1970 and was its president for 20 years.

During this time the firm grew from a dozen employees to about 40.    He was known as a technical expert and a good boss to work for.

Bill was a longtime member of Cathedral parish, a past president of the Holy Name Society, a former lector, and an active parish volunteer in his younger days.

Trapshooting, fly fishing on the Brule River, family gatherings, and rooting for the Packers were his favorite pastimes.

He was an avid reader of history and became an expert on the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.

He and his wife enjoyed traveling around the US and Canada and had fond memories of winters spent in Phoenix with their friends.

He thoroughly enjoyed his grandchildren and was involved in many of their activities.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marian; parents, Lewis W. and Dorothy (Harding) Harry; a brother, John (Mary) Harry of La Crosse; and sisters Lois (Urban) Kohl and Valerie (Ray) Adler of Marshfield.

He is survived by a daughter, Ann Louise Harry of Onalaska, WI; two sons, Paul (Sarah) Harry, of Rogers, MN, and William J. Harry, of Maple Grove, MN; sister-in-law, Helen Manion of Superior; daughter-in-law Jean (Karl) Stadstad, Eagan, MN; grandchildren Catherine Harry, Wayzata, MN, Jennifer (John) Huerd, Maple Grove, MN, John L. Harry, Minneapolis, MN, and Elise Harry, Rogers, MN, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 13, followed by an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Cathedral of Christ the King with Rev. Fr. Andrew Ricci as celebrant.

Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery.

A luncheon will follow at Cathedral’s Kress Hall.

Pallbearers for the funeral Mass will be nephews Robert Adler, Patrick Adler, James Adler, Peter Harry, John Manion, James Manion, Gerald Manion and Mark Manion.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Superior Cathedral School or the American Heart Association.

We will miss Bill’s great sense of humor, warm heart, and his frequent comment, “How about those Packers!”

The family would like to thank the staff at Bethany Riverside as well as neighbors Mary Stipetich and Gerald and Kay DeVinck for their kindness and care.
